Hidden Waterfalls Near Munnar: Discover Kerala Secret Natural Gems

Munnar is famous for its rolling tea plantations, mist-covered mountains and cool climate. But beyond the usual sightseeing spots, the hills around Munnar hide several beautiful waterfalls surrounded by forests, tea estates and rocky landscapes. These hidden waterfalls near Munnar are perfect for travellers who want to enjoy nature away from crowded tourist attractions.

From easy-to-reach cascades to waterfalls that require trekking, each destination offers a different experience.

1. Attukad Waterfalls

Attukad Waterfalls is one of the scenic waterfall destinations between Munnar and Pallivasal. Located around 9 km from Munnar town, it is surrounded by rocky hills, greenery and small streams. Kerala Tourism describes Attukad as an ideal destination for trekking and nature lovers.

The surrounding trails make the journey as enjoyable as the waterfall itself. During the monsoon and winter months, the greenery around the falls becomes especially attractive.

Best for: Trekking, photography, nature walks and picnics.

2. Nyayamakad Waterfalls

Nayamakad Waterfall, also spelled Nyayamakad, is another beautiful waterfall located between Munnar and Rajamala. The waterfall is surrounded by tea plantations, forests and green valleys. Kerala Tourism notes that the cascade drops from a height of around 1,600 metres and the area is suitable for trekking and picnics.

The combination of the waterfall and surrounding tea-covered hills makes this a wonderful stop for travellers who enjoy scenic landscapes.

Best for: Nature lovers, photography and peaceful sightseeing.

3. Lakkam Waterfalls

Lakkam Waterfalls is located on the Munnar–Marayoor route, close to Eravikulam National Park. Surrounded by dense greenery, this waterfall offers a more adventurous experience than many roadside attractions.

The waterfall is particularly beautiful when the surrounding streams have plenty of water. If you enjoy exploring lesser-known natural attractions, Lakkam is worth adding to your Munnar itinerary.

Best for: Nature photography, short hikes and exploring the forest landscape.

4. Thoovanam Waterfalls

For travellers looking for a more adventurous waterfall experience, Thoovanam Waterfalls is an excellent choice. It is located inside Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, near Marayoor.

Unlike easily accessible waterfalls, reaching Thoovanam involves a guided trek through the forest. Kerala Tourism states that the trek is around 4 km and is arranged by the Forest Department. The journey also gives visitors opportunities to experience the wildlife and vegetation of Chinnar.

Best for: Trekking, wildlife lovers and adventure travellers.

5. Chinnakanal Waterfalls

Chinnakanel Waterfalls is another scenic waterfall around Munnar. Located along the Munnar–Thekkady route, it is surrounded by the characteristic green landscape of the region.

The waterfall is a convenient addition to a road trip around Munnar, especially for travellers who want to combine waterfalls with viewpoints and tea plantations.

Best for: Road trips, photography and quick sightseeing stops.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Munnar’s Waterfalls?

The monsoon and the months immediately after the monsoon are generally the most impressive time to see waterfalls around Munnar, as rainfall increases the flow of mountain streams. Attukad, for example, is specifically recommended by Kerala Tourism during the monsoon and winter seasons.

However, heavy rainfall can also make rocks and trekking trails slippery. Always check local conditions before entering a waterfall area, and follow instructions from local authorities or forest officials.

Tips for Exploring Hidden Waterfalls Near Munnar

  • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip.

  • Carry drinking water and light snacks.

  • Avoid climbing slippery rocks near strong currents.

  • Follow forest and local authority instructions.

  • For forest waterfalls such as Thoovanam, use the required official guide or trekking arrangements.

  • Visit during daylight hours.

  • Avoid entering the water if the current is strong after heavy rain.

  • Keep the surroundings clean and carry your waste back.

Make Waterfalls Part of Your Munnar Trip

Munnar is much more than tea gardens and viewpoints. Its hidden waterfalls offer an opportunity to experience the quieter side of the Western Ghats. Whether you prefer an easy scenic stop like Nyayamakad, a trekking experience at Attukad, or a forest adventure at Thoovanam, there is something for every nature lover.
